Description
A flavorful, family-friendly Seafood Style Onion Boil where sweet onions steam seafood to perfection in buttery, seasoned foil packets. Perfect for backyard dinners or weeknight meals, this recipe is easy, customizable, and packed with juicy, aromatic flavor.
Ingredients
2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow), thickly sliced
1 lb shrimp, shell-on
1 lb crab legs
1 lb mussels or clams, cleaned
4 tbsp unsalted butter (or dairy-free alternative)
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
1 lemon, thinly sliced
Optional add-ins: corn on the cob (halved), baby potatoes (parboiled)
Instructions
Prepare the Onions: Slice onions into thick rounds or wedges. Lay evenly on a large sheet of heavy-duty foil.
Layer the Seafood: Place crab legs and lobster closer to the onions; shrimp, mussels, and clams on top.
Add Butter and Seasonings: Dot butter over the seafood and sprinkle minced garlic, paprika, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Add lemon slices.
Seal the Foil: Fold edges of foil tightly to prevent leaks, leaving a small air pocket for steam.
Cook:
Oven: 400°F for 20–30 minutes
Grill: Medium heat, 18–25 minutes
Campfire: Place on hot coals, rotate occasionally
Rest and Serve: Let packets rest 3–5 minutes before opening. Serve directly from foil with any sides or dipping sauces.
Notes
Don’t overcrowd packets for even cooking.
Swap seafood to taste; adjust cooking times if using larger lobster tails.
Try variations: spicy Cajun, garlic-butter lemon, or low-carb versions with no potatoes or corn.
Leftovers: store in the fridge for 2–3 days; reheat gently in oven or on stovetop to prevent overcooking.
